When the temperature drops, large numbers of Barbels start to gather in calm and flat sections of the rivers. Again, one month has gone by. And with October, the last month of the German trout season passed by. We had a lot of fun, fishing the last days for Trout in some of the most beautiful places of Germany and Austria. We caught a lot of nice brown trout and grayling, but Benjamin caught the most beautiful fish of the month, a 60cm lake char hen, in a cristal clear mountain lake. What a beautiful coloured fish!

September, one of the „best“ months of a central European flyfishermen´s year. Fish are getting nervous after a long hot summer with low water levels and gin-clear water. Standing the whole day in those breathable waders starts to get comfortable again, finally! With the dropping temperatures the caution of the big browns turns into blind aggression, they try to eat everything in order to get in shape for the coming spawning time. The size of the insects decreases with the water temperature, and the grayling are rising with a certainty that you could set a clock by. We hope you had some great days this September!

Solution:

Here is a strategy to improve your landscape photos and really draw the viewer in: make sure you include something interesting for the viewer to look at in the foreground, middleground and background.

Foreground: some old withered flowers and grass
Middleground: a small lake
Background: Mountains and a dramatic sky

Tipp 1: To add some motion into your shot, you can use a longer exposure time to let the flowers "move" in the wind.

Tipp 2: Use a Graded filter to achieve a better exposure, this really helps you to avoid white skys ore black grounds.

Focal lenght: 5 shots upright format at 35mm (Full-Frame)

Exposure time: 1/2 s

Aperture: f 16

ISO speed ratings: 50

Exposure Compensation: EV -1/3

Additional Equipment: Graded filter, tripod,

This August we´ve been on Iceland for 3 weeks. Although the conditions could have been better we had a great time, traveling trough that beautiful island and fishing for truly wild arctic char, brown trout, sea trout and salmon. I could write for hours about that place, the fish and the experiences we made. But instead of swarming, I´d rather give you an advice. If you love flyfishing and beautiful landscapes, get a flight to Iceland it´s your place to go!

July was the month of the opposites. Heavy rain showers with strong thunderstorms and the typical dry summer heat alternated the whole month. Because of the constant rotation of difficult fishing conditions we had to search other places to get some fish. The Austrian Alps above 2000m sea-level were a great place to fish in July. The water was cold and the fish were strong, perfect requirements for summer fishing. And the stunning landscapes are definitely more than just a bonus!

With June, half of the year 2010 has passed. The first two weeks of june were very rainy. The water-levels of our rivers rose to the highest level of the year. The hot and dry climate of the last days improved the levels surprisingly fast, and trout-fishing was successful again! Beside plenty different fishing trips, we had quite a lot to do in June. Both photo shootings and cinematography projects. Marcus just arrived back home from Switzerland/France he was filming FFF Master Instructor Christopher Rownes at the famous Doubs river. Bregenzer Ache 2010 - Photo-Report

After our fist day at the the Neckar River and a couple of beers in the late evening Ryan and I decided to fish the Bregenzer Ache River the next day. The Bregenzer Ache is well known for its native brown trout fishing and the beautiful landscape. It´s the main river of the Bregenzerwald, in the Vorarlberg state of Austria and a tributary to the Lake Constance.

After calling Claus Elmenreich, who lives a stone´s throw away from the Bregenzer Ache River, to get some water level information we decided to give it a try. The fishing turned out to be more challenging than expected, due to the colored water, but we managed to catch some nice fish. Altogether we had a great day and Ryan caught his native Austrian brown trout. Now check out the pictures of our day at that beautiful river...

This May was the coldest since over 100 years here in South Germany. Instead of big hatches and sunshine, rain and high water prevailed. The Highlight of the month was a trip through South-Germany and Austria together with Trout-Bum Ryan Davey from the U.S.
On this photo you can see Ryan standing on a huge rock at the Bregenzer Ache River in North-West Austria. The waft of mist behind him is evidence of heavy rain showers in the early morning.

The Neckar River

About 2 weeks ago I got the chance to fish a private section of the upper Neckar River , probably the most famous river of the Black Forrest that takes its source near Villingen-Schwenningen. This part of the Neckar is the private fishery of Ralf Vosseler, the owner of Vosseler Pro-Flyfishing.

A few days before fishing the Neckar river I talked to Trout-Bum Ryan Davey, he was on a 3 week Germany-Trip and wanted to get a dose of german flyfishing-adventures. So we planed a trip through South Germany and Austria.

Because of former sponsoring cooperation of the Trout-Bum´s and Vosseler Pro-Flyfishing, Ralf Vosseler invited Ryan and me to start our trip at the Neckar River. After packing my stuff and checking the route I started my trip to Villingen-Schwenningen.

I arrived more or less as scheduled and picked up Ryan at about 9am. We drove to Vosseler where we met Ralf. He showed us the manufacturing of the Vosseler Reels, and we talked about the fishing at the Neckar River. After a nice espresso we went to the river.

The first look from the bridge confirmed our prospects, high and brown water... the first fish took the Streamer right under the bridge.

The last few weeks offered some spectacular trout-fishing, after the heavy snowmelt the water warmed up pretty fast and life returned to the rivers. The trout are feeding all day long, especially during the late afternoon. Long leaders and mid-sized dryflies brought some nice fish. Check out the following pictures of the last fishing trips.

April has gone, and we can look back on plenty hours at the waterside. In the beginning the fishing conditions made fishing difficult, not least due to significant snowmelt of the northern Alps. In the middle of april, The 5th Experience the World of Fly Fishing took place near Munich, definately a highlight of April 2010. The last 2 weeks offered some truly great troutfishing. The fish were feeding all day long and the remarkable extensive late afternoon hatches developed awesome dryflyfishing.

5th Experience the World of Fly Fishing 2010

From the 17th-18th of April the 5th "Experience the World of Fly Fishing" took place in Fürstenfeldbruck near Munich, Germany.

Almost 3000 visitors, from more than 20 countries, attended the fair on two exhibition days. With 86 exhibitors and 13 casters the "Experience the World of Fly Fishing" counts to the largest international fly fishing event in continental Europe. Of course we visited that great event and we tried to capure some scenes with our cameras. We had two great days, checking out the new stuff and talk to old and new friends.

This March definitely was the last month of that thoroughgoing winter, the snow was exceptionally enduring and the melt water took quite a long time to run through our waters. Anyway, last days of March offered some great trout-fishing. As usual, trout felt hungry after the first spates of the melt water. And needless to say, we served some Streamers to allay their hunger...

international trade exhibition for fishing and flyfishing

Each year at the beginning of our trout season in Germany, a fair called “AQUA-FISCH” takes place in Friedrichshafen, South Germany. It´s the largest fishing-fair in Southern Germany and a popular meeting point for fishermen all around Germany, Austria and Swizerland. Whether you need some last tackle or tying items to get your season started worthy or you’re just eager to meet some flyfishers, doing some casts and keeping up to date what is going on in the world of flyfishing, it’s worthwhile to participate.

Of course we were there. We met up with friends and other flyfishing-fanatics, we checked out the new stuff for 2010 and needless to say we took a few shots, which we won´t deny you.

Everyone knows that February is the shortest month of the year, however for any German flyfisher it feels like the longest month because the trout closed season lasts till end of february. This month was exceptionally cold and snowy, freezing temperatures and snow storms didn´t make fishing easier. As usual the Barbels offered the best fishing in February, short-line nymphing with long leaders and heavy tungsten nymphs worked great, even on the coldest days. Remember, the colder the day the deeper you have to fish! To be honest, we have had enough of tungsten-tossing. Finally, after almost 5 months of waiting, Trout-season is about to start!

Tutorial pt.1 "moving pictures with long exposures"

With long exposures, you can add action to your pictures. Flowing water, moving trees or persons. Try to shoot motives like that using longer exposure time and you´ll be impressed how much dynamic can be put in photos when allowing them to “move”.

If you are using such a technique, Image Stabilizers are really helpful when taking pictures out of your hand (allows 1/30-1 sec. / depending on focal length).

To go further you won't get around buying a tripod which holds your camera system firmly in position using exposure times up to 30s or more with the “bulb-mode”.

Even though you can't carry a tripod at all times while fishing, there are some opportunities to get such photos by improvising and using natural tripods like stones or leaning against branches that are stable enough to carry your Camera in right position.

How to do:
In order to get long exposure times you have to stop down the aperture (maybe actually to the minimum) and set the ISO Speed at the lowest level (ISO 100 or 50). These settings will cause the maximum exposure times.
If you need very long exposures even during the day, a Neutral Density Filter (“ND Filter”) can be helpful. This type of filters works like sunglasses placed in front of your lens in order to reduce the amount of light getting on your sensor, so you are able to set longer exposure times for the same exposition. They are available in a translucence range from 0,0001% - 50%, thus variety won't be a problem. But keep in mind that due to the low light incidence the automatic setting operations (autofocus/exposure settings) of your camera won't work properly using that sort of filter.
Yet another sort of filter you might use for longer exposures are polarizing filters. For usual photography it is a negative feature of these filters but in our case its shady side could be very useful. Its polarizing effect lessens the amount of light going into the lens so your exposure time lengthens about 2-4x(depends on the adjusted angle). Along the way you can benefit from its proper usage: it reduces reflections on water, stones etc. and makes the colours look more intense (further information about polarizing filters will be collected in another tutorial).
If your camera bag doesn't contain any filters you have to work with the natural dimmer. Means you can get your long exposure time shots in the dawn, either early morning or late in the evenings. These parts of the day provide best conditions to get your exposure times of a few seconds without using any filters.

Below we have prepared some “moving pictures” where you can find different “flowing styles” and get a bit a sense of which exposure time is useful for which flowing effect.

45mm - 1 sec. - ISO 100 - tripod

18mm - 8 sec. - ISO 100 - camera anchored beween rocks - remote control

Last fishing-session has passed, the end of the Fishing-season 2009. No time to look back on past flyfishing-adventures. Tieing some tungsten barbel-beadheads before celebrating New Year`s Eve together with our friends allows us to look ahead to the Season 2010!

At midnight... a few over the Lake Constance

Time to get to the water, celebrating the real New Year`s Eve for any flyfishermen. The first fishing-trip of the season 2010! We decided to fool some barbels and grayling!
The first step out of the house promised a damn cold fishing-day and approved the negative double-digits of the thermometer. Shortly after wading the first time we realized two pants and almost any sock we found were barely enough to allow some serious fishing. Expectedly the fish seemed to be nearly as frozen as our lines and rings, but that´s what winterfishing is all about, staying power is the capital importance.

After three hours of Chech-Nymphing the deep runs without any activity at the end of our leaders, something happened further upstream. Marcus´ 4-weight Rod got bent, and he fought the first fish in 2010. Neither a barbel nor a grayling appeared, a Rainbow trout busted the surface and started to head downstream. A few minutes later Marcus landed the beauty and released it after a few shots of that wonderful spawn-colored fish.

"1. Messe für Jagd und Fischerei Dornbirn"

From 12.11.2009 - 15.11.2009 the first "Messe für Jagd und Fischerei", a fair for hunter and fishermen, took place in Dornbirn, Austria.

The fair offered a lot of intresting things for flyfishermen such as the new coreless reel-series NATural and REVOlution from Z-Reels, the handmade Tonkin-Rods from gespliesste.ch or the intresting travel-reports (Cuba, Kamtchatka and Kanada) and Casting-Instructions from the Effa-Instructors.

Our Team consited of the EFFA-Instructors Günter Feuerstein, Ewald Grabherr, Claus Elmenreich, Sepp Fuchs (NL) and Richard Verbeek (NL) the former Flycasting World Champion Günter Mennel and me.

The mission was simple, explaining and showing the visitors everything that belongs to flyfishing. From the first cast with a flyrod and special flytying-tactics till different forms of flycasting with dryflies and the choose of the right hook for Tarpon-Flyfishing.
I really hope we helped a few people to make their first steps in flyfishing.

Flyfishing is way more than just catching fish with some plumes tied on a hook. It´s the fascinating way to cast the flyline, that makes flyfishing different and unique. Quite equal if you´re shooting a brass-tube to the other side of the salmonriver with your 11-weight doublehander, or serving a tiny midge in front of a spooky trout cruising trough the gin-clear mountainlake. . .

Flycasting-videos, casting-instructions... simply everything that has to do with flycasting will be concentrated here.

It shortens the winter and prepares us for the coming season, it allows dreaming about the next fishing-trip and relaxes the mind and body. For us flytying plays an important role in flyfishing.

Foggy mornings, blazing leaves, ginclear waters and haching needle-flies in the warm afternoon sun. It´s autumn, It´s grayling time!
Tiny dryflys, emergers and nymphs on razor-thin leaders are indispensable for the success. Fishing the undersized inconspicuous looking piece of plumes and hair downstream the deaddrift-way gives you the best chances to smell the thyme.
This form of flyfishing demands a great deal of any flyfisher, broken leaders and spooked fish are a daily occurrence. But thats why we keep casting this silly small fly towards the next fish, in spite of wet socks and frozen rings, again and again.

Enough said, the following grayling-fishing pictures were shot all around Europe, from „Hedmark“ (Norway) ,the „Salzburger-Land“ in Austria to the South-German „Allgäu“ and the famous river Doubs in the Canton of Jura in Switzerland.

And anyone who is engaged in photography knows that your learning process goes on and on, season after season.
